1974 Porsche 911 2.7R Lightweight
2,020 lbs with half tank of fuel
Chassis 9114101723

In 1967, Porsche stripped a 911 down to the essentials and built the 911R - an ultra lightweight, race focused version of the F-series “longhood” 911. The 911R received a more powerful engine, fiberglass body panels, lexan/plexi windows and various other modifications to increase its power-to-weight ratio. Porsche only made about 20 of these examples and the G-series that followed in 1974 went the other direction: heavier, safer, bumpered to comply with DOT regulations. The 911R never made the jump, however, this car answers what would have happened if it had.

The Build:
The perfect base to start the build was of course the lightest spec G-series - an early, narrow, factory sunroof delete car. As per the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this car was originally Irish Green. Wanting to stay true to its roots, the car was finished in single-stage Toyota TRD Army Green - a color that no one would have thought looked so good on a vintage Porsche. Paint & body were done when the car was completely disassembled, so the engine bay, front trunk, wheel wells, etc were also done as well and looks very tidy - underneath is just as clean as the exterior. From there on out, the 911R formula was taken very seriously - add power, subtract weight. The fiberglass body panels were professionally sectioned and custom fit to ensure OEM-like panel gaps. These body gaps are better than most factory 911’s out there - true craftsman work.

This 911 is sorted and ready to rip. The car feels incredibly nimble to drive and, at only 2,020 lbs, you don’t need a lot of power to go fast. Combine that agility with the induction sound from the Weber carbs, the fast/free revving from the lightweight flywheel and you get a visceral vintage racing experience that is difficult to express with words. The paint is in great shape, shines beautifully and, by nature of single stage paint, has a few very minor flaws throughout. This is a car for the driver or collector who already knows the difference between a tribute and a caricature. It isn't presented as a factory car, because it isn't one — it's presented as what it is: a thoughtfully executed realization of the 911R formula that Porsche never carried into the G-series, done by someone who understood exactly why the original worked. That is where the name 2.7R was born - a reimagined version of “what might have been”
